Casting Brother Thomas-Makette

You probably recognize this little guy from my profile image. I thought I would post a series of turn-around photos of him before he officially goes under the knife. I’m hoping to pull a mold from him in the next few weeks which means he’s currently in parts getting ready for his operation. More photos of the process to come.

What a cutie! I can’t wait to see the cast, did you figure out how you’re going about it?

My friend Rich Schiller is helping figure things out. Rich was a huge influence on me when I was modelmaking back when we lived in Oak Park. At some point I’ll be heading to his new studio in Valparaiso to make the mold and cast him. Can’t wait.

I love the look of his clothes.

Thanks Luke. I made a negative textured plate by pressing sculpy into burlap. From there I rolled out sheets of clay like cloth, pressed them into the plates for a positive texture. Then basically assembled the clay on top of the figure as if I was sewing clothes onto a manikin. I’m very pleased with the results. I think the life-sized burlap texture plays well on the miniature scaled makette. I’m currently in the process of filling in the voids in preparation for the mold. More on that later.
