Illuminating St. Peter

Br. Thomas’ occupation is to paint the portraits of the stained glass Saints into the sacred texts of Scripture.  In this scene we learn that the illuminations themselves are watching as Br. Thomas creates them.

Out the Window

This sequence takes place at the close of the first act.  Br. Thomas stares out after the dragonfly through a crack in the window to the Scriptorium.  For a moment he has a glimpse of nature, like an animated jewel, that takes his breath away. . . and then he falls.

The Baby Coos

This is one of my favorite scenes in the film.  The dragonfly has entered uninvited into the Scriptorium.  While the saints seem flustered by the intrusion the Christ child simply wants to play and coos after the dragonfly as he passes by.

Baby Birds

Br. Thomas takes the day off of working in the scriptorium and discovers new and wonderful things in the world outdoors.  The Dragonfly is his guide, coaxing the animals to wake up and show themselves.
